Description

'The mother of all Arbutus honeys'

This honey came as a result of a conversation between Asterios, who is our man on the ground in Greece, and an organic award winning beekeeper called Kostas.  Asterios tried Kostas' Arbutus and told me that it was the most potent Arbutus honey he had tasted. When I also tried a sample I discovered he was right! So we secured some, which comes from the slopes of Mount Pelion, Greece.

Raw Organic Greek Arbutus Honey is unlike any other honey you will have ever tasted, with a unique bitter edge. It is the marmite of honey - you will either love it or hate it!  It has a beautiful aftertaste, but many are surprised by its initial bitter flavour. It is one of the most overt tasting varieties we have experienced! This is a connoisseur variety for those with a love of unique and potent honey.

What exactly does it taste like ? You will find this honey has a bitter taste like roasted coffee beans or very dark chocolate.

Where does the honey come from? This Arbutus honey comes from Mount Pelion, Greece - one of the best places in Greece for Arbutus Honey.

Who produces this honey? Asterios is one of the most genuine people you could ever meet. HIs aim is always to present to us the highest quality of honey possible. He is lucky enough to have an amazing network of fellow Artisian Greek Beekeepers and this honey is bought to you from one such beekeeper called Kostas.

What about the plant the honey comes from? The Arbutus unedo bush is an evergreen, and is nicknamed 'strawberry tree' due to its fruit, which look a bit like strawberries. However, these berries are not overly sweet, leaning more to acidic, but they are apparently very refreshing. The fruit of this bush is sometimes used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Common uses: Arbutus honey is known as a gourmet honey by connoisseurs and those with adventurous tastes, so it really adds a unique flavour to dishes. Savoury foods really benefit from its rich, bittersweet taste.

Arbutus honey facts: Arbutus honey is a rare variety, which is only found in good quantity in 3 places in the world - Portugal, Sardinia and Greece, and it's one of the most potent tasting varieties you can find. It contains homogentisic acid, which gives it its brown pigment as well as other unique properties. Arbutus honey is also being researched by scientists for potential chemo preventive treatments for colon cancer.

Crystallisation:-  Please know that raw honey does crystallise and is a natural process of raw honey (therefore we cannot except returns on honey that may have crystallised). We indicate on the website the state of each honey - either runny or crystallised but be aware this is to the best of our knowledge and the state can change quickly.   If you want your honey runny and it has crystallised it's very easy to return it to runny go to this link Runny Honey  or see this section under our FAQ's Why Is My Honey Crystallised?

We only supply raw honey because we believe this is how all honey should be.  If you don't want your honey to crystallise then raw honey probably isn't for you.
