Description
The background: The aroma of the Wild Oregano on the mountainside was heavenly. The sun was shining brightly and I could hear and see the bees busily seeking out the nectar. The view was to die for. That was this Spring (2022) when I discovered this Wild Oregano honey on a honey trip to Greece. I had been seeking Wild Oregano for a while. There is plenty of cultivated Oregano honey but finding truly Wild Oregano honey is a challenge. So I was delighted to discover Giorgios and his Wild Oregano honey. Giorgios is truly a man of nature and has found some amazing places for his bees to create honey- like the place on Mount Othrys where the Wild Oregano honey is created.
This Raw Greek Wild Oregano Blossom honey is a luscious honey, extremely unique for its distinctive full, intense, slightly spicy aroma and taste. Beautiful poured over a feta cheese.
More on the flavour: This honey starts off with a strong floral and herbal flavour, lengthening into a sweetness that reminds us of very sweet, sun-ripened oranges. The herbaceous notes lend an interesting, contrasting sourness to balance the sweetness of the foretaste and the spicy aroma.
Where does the honey come from?: This honey comes from Wild Oregano that Giorgios' bees collect on a mountain free from pesticides, herbicides & fungicides. Oregano in Greece means 'Joy of the Mountain'. An apt phrase for this mountain honey.
Who produces this honey? Asterios is one of the most genuine people you could ever meet. His aim is always to present to us the highest quality honey possible. He is lucky enough to have an amazing network of fellow artisan Greek beekeepers. This honey is bought to you by one such beekeeper, called Giorgos. For Asterios and Gorgios beekeeping is an art and they are excited that their honey will be appreciated in the UK.
What about the plant the honey comes from? Oregano is a flowering herb plant in the mint family Lamiaceae. It was native to the Mediterranean region, but now is widely naturalised elsewhere in the temperate Northern Hemisphere.
Please note: The video of the open jar with honey dipper represents the Oregano honey - the video if of our 1kg jar which we also sell.
Please know that raw honey does crystallise and this is a natural process that occurs mainly due to the natural glucose in raw honey. For more information on why honey sets visit this article and for a more scientific explanation go to wikipedia.
