Description
The Raw Greek Chestnut Honey from Mount Athos has a deliciously rich and deep molasses flavour with a bitterness reminiscent of the aroma from freshly brewed coffee. You will still be tasting this honey in your throat 10 minutes and more after you have eaten it. Not for the faint-hearted - so please don't buy if you dislike bitter notes!
About the beekeeper: This honey was brought to us by Thomas, a very talented young Greek beekeeper.
Thomas was able to get this incredibly rare honey from the Monks of Mount Athos, who have been practicing the ancient monastic tradition of beekeeping for hundreds of years.
Where it comes from: Mount Athos is both the name of the mountain and the peninsula situated in north-eastern Greece. Also named the "Holy Mountain", it represents an important centre of Eastern Orthodox monasticism.
Colour: It is very dark - with a brown-reddish colour.
More on Chestnut honey: This is a dark thick runny honey which has deep, full bodied, slightly smoky, earthy tones. These deliver a more savoury taste than most other honeys and an element of bitterness in the aftertaste.
The bees love to feed on the sap that comes from the tree as well as the blossoms. The tree lends a beautiful and unique taste to the honey, the nutty flavour carries through as well as a taste a little similar to maple syrup but slightly more rich and malty. This Chestnut honey has a slightly bitter taste. However, Chestnut honey varies a lot, differing considerably from one area to another. Some are mild, some are bitter.
How Raw Honey is Different from Processed Honey
Raw honey is minimally processed, meaning it’s packed with natural enzymes, pollen, and nutrients that are often lost during processing. Most supermarket honeys are processed to create a uniform appearance, often being drained of pollen, heated, and blended. Raw honey changes in flavour, colour, and texture depending on the season and the flowers that bees feed on, making each batch unique.
Crystallisation in Raw Honey
Raw honey tends to crystallise over time due to its natural glucose content. This is a natural process and does not affect the quality of the honey. For more information on why honey crystallises, visit our blog or check Wikipedia for a more scientific explanation.

Chestnut honey
Well packed, delivered promptly. I love the earthy taste, the texture and the fragrance of the chestnut flowers really comes through. I tasted it with my nephew and great nephew who also love your honey and they found it too strong. They loved the Mountain Oak though.

Oak honey
Excellent quality
Deliciously unique honey
I love this honey. Dark deep colour, intense flavour (a sort of smoky caramel with sweet earthiness that is delicious). It is sweet without the sickly sweet tones of processed honey. Plus it's active and great for the gut with probiotics. A luxurious healthy addition to my daily diet - either straight from the spoon or on wholegrain porridge. Enjoy.
