Description
Antonio's raw Organic Arbutus honey is an incredibly deep tasting type. It is quite bitter, like roasted coffee beans and bitter dark chocolate. It has a beautiful after taste, but many are put off by its medicinal main flavour. This is a connoisseur variety for those with a love of unique and potent honey. It is one of the most overt tasting varieties we have experienced!
PLEASE NOTE THE 500G JARS OF ARBUTUS ARE CRYSTALLISED.
If you have not had arbutus honey previously, we would recommend trying a tester before purchasing a full-size jar as the flavour can be quite intense. If you would like to try a free tester please just give us a call and we can add one to your order.
Colour: This particular honey is a very dark brown when runny with a shade of purple and a hint of deep red in the light. This changes to a much paler golden colour when crystallised.
Where does the honey come from? This variety of Arbutus honey comes from the northern mountain ranges of Madrid in Spain known as Sierra De Guadarrama.
Who produces this honey? The bees of Antonio Simone, a 4th generation beekeeper who takes pride in producing honey in a traditional way without adding or taking away anything. Antonio's hives are based in the mountain ranges north of Madrid, his beekeeping practices and the land he has his hives on have been certified as organic by the Committee of Organic Agriculture in Madrid.
What about the plant the honey comes from? The Arbutus unedo bush is an evergreen, also known as modrono in Spanish and is nicknamed 'strawberry tree' due to its fruit that look a little like strawberry. However, these berries are not overly sweet, leaning more to acidic, but they are apparently very refreshing. The fruit of this bush is used in traditional Chinese medicine.
Common uses: Arbutus honey is known as a gourmet honey by connoisseurs and those with adventurous tastes, so it really adds a unique flavour to dishes. Savoury foods really benefit from its rich, bittersweet taste.
Arbutus honey facts: Arbutus honey is a rare variety and one of the most potent tasting types you can find. A unique and rare type that is only found in good quantity in 3 places in the world, Portugal, Sardinia and Greece. It contains homogentisic acid which gives it its brown pigment as well as other unique properties.

We just love Arbutus
My husband is crazy about Arbutus honey and so am I. When we very first tasted it we kind of paused for a moment because we had never tasted any honey like it before. The description of the flavour given by Tim is very accurate and once you get hooked .... If you aren't sure try a small jar to begin with. Can't recommend this honey highly enough.
Arbutus Honey
I was advised to take this honey by my specialist due to repeated urine infections and I am pleased with the results, I’ve managed to keep them at bay for 5 months. I really like the taste also.
Arbutus honey
I always buy Oak Honey, but after investigating the benefits of arbutus and how it is used in chinese medicine, decided to try the arbutus honey for its health benefits. Initially the strong flavour and bitterness was a bit of a shock but my taste buds are adapting and can now appreciate the depth of flavour. It is a unique honey that is deep and rich and full of goodness.
Beautiful honey
This honey is my husband's favourite and I have to admit I love it too, although I feel that we should try some other flavours too. His latest craze at the moment is to make honegar using the Arbutus and the Tom Old Tree Apple Cider Vinegar. The Arbutus is really very lovely and very moreish.
Stunning honey
There is such a fantastic range of honeys and we have so many that we love and others that we still have not tried. However, Arbutus is our favourite so far and we just had have another one before we try some of the others. It's sweet but not overly so and does have an unusual taste but it is so moreish.
